Quick Tests to Differentiate Copper and Aluminium
1. The Scratch Test: Use a knife or file to scrape the surface. If it reveals bright reddish-orange beneath any coating, it is copper. If it is dull silver-gray, it is aluminium.
2. Weight Comparison: Copper is more than three times denser than aluminium. Two pipes of the exact same size will feel noticeably different in hand.
3. Beware of Copper-Clad Aluminium (CCA): Common in cheap audio and network cables, CCA has an ultra-thin copper skin over an aluminium core. Cutting the wire straight across reveals the silvery center.
- Test 1: Visual cross-section cut
- Test 2: Weight-to-volume density feel
- Test 3: Magnet test (neither will stick, but steel casings will)
